“Painting is a way for me to connect with what I feel and see: nature, life, ideas, and relationships. As people respond to my work I feel satisfied somehow I have a purpose. Nature inspires me. Light, color and shapes of everyday life: from urban to pristine; I can and will find something beautiful there. Sometimes painting subjects come from observing life and scenery and other times I develop images from my imagination. Either way of working is orchestrated by a compelling inner force.”

KIM DREW      The Artist Behind the Art

Seattle artist Kim Drew remembers his kindergarten class at the young age of 6. His teacher, Miss Mertha held up his tree for all the class and pinned it up on the board – that very first tree served as inspiration.

Drew’s sketchpad and pencil are always nearby. In fact, throughout Europe in the 1980’s, he traded sketches for meals, much to the delight of café patrons. Although his travels and career took him far from Seattle, he returned in 1990 and was again drawn to the Market of his youth and to participating in the ancient practice of village trading and to work with his mentor and legend, Nolan Booty at the Pike Place Market.

This philosopher-artist unleashes his surroundings with quick smooth lines and a consuming heart. A master colorist, his desire to understand and release the subtle effects of shadow and light are evident—there is a quiet passion in his work. Nature, the highest master of light and dark, draws him out as a Shaman about to capture the healing spirit. Drew often gathers his tools and a well-used easel, and takes them to the woods or the desert where he’ll draw and paint in the visceral quiet from dawn to dusk, tracking colors as they change with the day.

Plein Air painting excursions to Puget Sound locations and abroad inspire this artist with the beauty of the natural world. Salmon is a favorite theme and his work has been selected as a limited edition print three times for the annual “Issaquah Salmon Days” in Issaquah, WA. He won a best poster award from IFEA in a global competition for his 2000 Salmon Days print.

Kim Drew graduated with honors from the renowned Art Center in Pasadena, California. His work appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Time/Life and Reader’s Digest, to name a few. A five-time Award of Excellence recipient from the Society of Illustrators, Mr. Drew is an outstanding muralist who has dotted his native Pacific Northwest.  As a Signature Member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Drew began exhibiting his work at Seattle’s’ Pike Place Market in January 2001.

Recently, Kim was selected for group shows at the Frye Art Museum, Nordic Heritage, Maryhill, and the Tacoma Art Museum.
